Foster Programs

We have several programs at Rural Dog Rescue to set our fosters and the dogs they care for up for success. Learn more about these offerings and how you can get involved!
Doggy Day Out

Doggy Day Out offers our boarding pups some TLC, visibility to potential adopters, and helps Rural Dog Rescue learn more about dogs not yet in foster homes. This aids in finding fosters or adopters faster and enhances their profiles with great content.

Who can participate:

  • Approved fosters
  • RDR trained handlers
  • RDR intake volunteers

What does this entail?

Pick up a dog from one of our DMV boarding partners and embark on an adventure! Whether it's a neighborhood walk or a few hours out, we ask you to take lots of photos/videos, learn about their personality, and ensure their safety and well-being.

Rising Star Program

The Rising Star foster program aims to quickly move dogs out of boarding and into homes, helping us learn more about them and better prepare them for a permanent foster or adopter.

A Rising Star foster acts as a launch pad for a dog by providing them a temporary place to crash while we work behind the scenes to find a more long-term solution. Your job is to learn as much about them as possible and gather great content for their profiles and social media during a two-week stint in your care.

What we expect of you:

  • Hold a dog that is currently in boarding for two weeks.
  • Learn about the dog's personality, preferences, and training needs.
  • Provide regular updates, share photos/videos, and participate in requested marketing activities to promote your dog.
  • Kickstart their training, particularly crate training and leash skills.
  • Attend at least one adoption event in the two-week window.

What you can expect of us:

  • A commitment to move your foster dog to a new home at the end of the two weeks.
  • A strong line of communication from our foster, marketing, and leadership teams.
  • Access to tons of resources to promote your pup and set them up for success.

Who is a great fit for this program?

  • Fosters that can only commit to a dog for temporary periods of time.
  • Fosters eager to help a dog new to DC settle into city life while learning to trust they are in a safe and loving environment.
  • Fosters that love marketing their dogs! Whether it’s strutting them around the neighborhood, making friends at the dog park, or posting cute videos to social media, this is a fun opportunity to make a big impact.

How is this different from regular fostering?

This program is designed to gather a lot of information about a dog - that we don’t yet know much about -  in a short period-of-time. And ensures a dog is not sitting in boarding which can be detrimental to their development. While technically all fosters should be getting to know their foster dogs and helping them get adopted, a foster should only agree to participate in the Rising Star Program if they feel prepared to make the most of the two weeks they have with a pup - this includes attending at least one adoption event and hosting an Instagram takeover on the RDR account.

If you simply want to provide a safe and loving home for a dog temporarily, that is great, too! Just make sure to let us know so expectations can be adjusted.

Foster Meet & Greets

The Foster Meet & Greet Program helps move dogs in boarding to foster homes by allowing fosters to meet them before committing. Interested fosters can meet a volunteer at a scheduled time at one of our boarding partners to meet one or several dogs that are in boarding and do not currently have a foster. If a foster decides a dog is a good fit, the volunteer will assist with providing properly fitted gear, vet records, and medication so they can take the dog home that day. Note, this is only for dogs in boarding. Dogs already in a foster home will not be available for this program.

Who is a great fit for this program?

  • Newly approved fosters who aren’t sure what kind of dog is a good fit for them.
  • Fosters with a dog of their own who want to ensure they will get along with a foster pup.
  • Fosters looking for the right personality and lifestyle match.
  • Fosters torn between several dogs and looking to meet more than one.
