Who Are The Underdogs?

The Hounds, The Black Dogs, The Seniors, and The Sick & Injured

Our motto is the Underdog. Read about the underdogs we are committed to saving.

  • Hounds are one of the most prevalent dogs in southern shelters. Often discarded after the hunting season, hounds are left on their own to survive.

With the overpopulation of hounds in high-kill southern shelters, they are often the first dogs to get put down.

  • Black dogs are routinely passed over in shelters. Many believe that it is because they do not photograph as well as dogs of other colors, which leads to decreased adoption interest.

  • Senior dogs are often overlooked in shelters. They may need some TLC, but we are committed to giving them a new lease on life! We find them forever families to live out their golden years.

When a senior dog becomes a member of the Rural Dog Rescue pack, they get a full exam from one of our veterinarians. Some will require heartworm treatment, a dental cleaning and extractions, biopsies on growth or tumors, and x-rays or medication for arthritis.

Senior dogs are a great fit for those looking for a calm, sweet dog who likes to curl up on the couch together.

  • The Sick and Injured are also another population overlooked in shelters. The sick and injured can be costly to fix, and do not seem immediately adoptable in shelters - so we ensure that these dogs are not overlooked.

We take the broken and the battered and bring them back to health to help them find their forever homes! From broken legs to broken hips, heartworm positive dogs, and many other injuries we are committed to the underdog.
